Home design has always been central to Wilmington Magazine. Each issue, we devote an eight-page feature to one custom home, exploring the architecture, interiors and craftsmanship that make it distinctive.
Blue Heron Designs helps homeowners navigate the hundreds of decisions involved in new construction. The studio’s role, owner Casey Scanlan explains, is to bring “clarity and ease to a process that can feel overwhelming,” while creating homes that reflect each family’s routines, priorities and connection to Wilmington. Intercoastal Cabinetry & Designs brings that same level of personalization to custom cabinetry and millwork, with owner Alan Acree emphasizing “craftsmanship, attention to detail, and personalization” on every project.
Flores & Foley Roofing has served Wilmington since 1999 and approaches each roof as a complete coastal system. “We treat every roof like it’s protecting someone we know,” says founder Rene Flores Soriano. Port City Sound and Security integrates audio, lighting, networking, shades and security into systems designed to make technology “easy and enjoyable” for homeowners.
This category also celebrates the details that make a house feel like home. Sugarwood Interiors combines furnishings with full-service design, offering pieces with what owner Janece Stone describes as a “refined coastal appeal.” Porch Concepts helps families carry that comfort outdoors, creating porches and patios designed for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying life along the coast.
Our antique stores have also caught the eye of renowned interior designers, including Marshall Watson, who recalls purchasing a giant chandelier from The Ivy Cottage for a set he designed for Ray Kennedy’s play “The Thursday Night Bridge Club.” On a recent trip back to Wilmington for Design NC, he summarizes, “We are steeped in Southern charm and sweet iced tea!”
