In a profession often defined by transactions, Horton & Mendez focuses on something more enduring

On any given weekend in Wilmington, it is not unusual to see members of the Horton & Mendez Injury Attorneys team out in the community. Whether at a neighborhood event, fundraiser, or a local gathering, firm representatives are often talking with residents long before legal help is ever needed. Based in Wilmington, Horton & Mendez represents individuals and families across North Carolina in personal injury and workers’ compensation cases. Beyond the courtroom, however, the firm has built a reputation for something less expected: a consistent and intentional investment in the communities it serves.

Grounded in Experience

Concentrating on personal injury and workers’ compensation law, much of their work involves auto accidents and workplace injuries. Clients often come to the firm while balancing medical recovery, missed income, and the uncertainty that follows a serious injury.

A defining strength of the firm lies in the background of its founders, Devlin Horton and Nicholas Mendez. Both previously worked in insurance defense, experience that now informs their advocacy and shapes the firm’s “We Know Their Playbook” philosophy. Their understanding of how insurers evaluate claims, where negotiations tend to stall, and when pressure makes a difference provides a practical advantage for clients navigating complex legal and financial systems.

Giving Back as a Core Responsibility

Over the past several years, the firm’s commitment to engaging and uplifting the Wilmington community has grown steadily. Horton & Mendez contributed more than $50,000 during its early community giving initiatives, increased that total to over $75,000 last year, and is on track to exceed $100,000 in community contributions in the year ahead. As that work expanded, the firm launched Horton & Mendez Cares as a natural extension of its outreach, creating a dedicated charitable arm to coordinate partnerships, sponsorships, and direct support for local organizations.

This Spring, the firm is hosting multiple community events—including Blooms & Brews at Airlie Gardens, a family-friendly Spring Fling Easter Egg Hunt, a Canines for Service Gala, and much more. Ultimately, their goal is not only to donate, but to amplify organizations doing meaningful, often underrecognized work across the community.

Best of NC Heroes: Recognizing Everyday Impact

One of the most visible expressions of that commitment is the firm’s Best of NC Heroes initiative, a statewide campaign designed to recognize those making a meaningful difference in their communities. Community members are invited to nominate the people they consider heroes, whether their impact is widely known or quietly felt.

While the 2025 campaign focused on first responders and nurses, this year’s initiative is open to anyone making a positive impact, from coaches and teachers to parents, neighbors, and volunteers. With up to $4,000 in prizes, selected honorees receive financial support, public recognition, and the opportunity to shine a light on the causes and communities they serve. Voting starts March 16th, and any North Carolina-based hero can be nominated—so stay tuned as Horton & Mendez Cares announces the winning heroes in May.

Staying the Course

As Wilmington continues to grow, Horton & Mendez remains committed to staying closely connected to the community that has shaped it. Through sustained outreach, local partnerships, and a consistent presence beyond the office, the firm has built relationships rooted in familiarity and trust.

That long-term mindset carries through to the client experience as well. Years after a case is resolved, the firm hopes clients remember not just the outcome, but how they were treated along the way, with care, effort, and a genuine sense that their situation mattered.
