B. Collective Co.
Kevin & Bridgett Mazer
Lead Lighting Designer: Kate Reynolds
(left)
Mission: Educating our clientele to understand the importance of how lighting impacts a room—setting the tone of the atmosphere through elements of color, scale, design and ambiance.
Best advice received: Rome wasn’t built in a day. It takes a lot of curating, time and energy to build a product you’re proud of. Enjoy the process!
What we love most about owning a business in Wilmington: Seeing something you’ve created succeed and enrich people’s lives is incredibly fulfilling. We take great pride in living in Wilmington and choosing lighting that captures the beauty of our coastal surroundings.
Words of wisdom: Always know your value—professionally and personally.
One thing we’ve learned along the way: You’ll never finish your daily to-do list. Don’t let the stress of daily tasks interfere with life’s pleasures. The opportunity to have more work the next day is a gift—a lack of which would bring more stress.
Strengths: Building a dynamic and enjoyable work environment that fosters collaboration and creativity. We prioritize keeping our team ahead of industry trends and continuously enhancing their knowledge by attending trade shows, rep events and other educational opportunities. We also focus on truly understanding our clients by actively listening to their vision, preferences and needs—allowing us to curate personalized solutions that transform their spaces into something truly special.

Big Sky Design

Mission:
To provide creative and inspiring interior design for residential and commercial spaces. We have loved being an integral part of Wilmington’s building community, working with architects, tradespeople, homeowners and businesses.
Best advice received: My dad taught me very early in life to create my own opportunities, and it’s been the mantra I’ve followed—especially since starting Big Sky Design in 1997. I recognize that positive energy and a strong work ethic brought to all aspects of your life can truly make a difference in your level of success. It also translates into the culture you create in the world around you. For me and my team, it’s that energy that guides our creative process and creates the opportunities we have to reimagine interior spaces and build meaningful relationships with our clients.
What I love most about owning a business in Wilmington: I love meeting people in the area through every project we’re involved with—getting to know who they are, where they work and how they want to live.
One thing I’ve learned along the way: Dream big! About five years ago, the Big Sky team moved to a new space at Bradley Creek Station on Oleander Drive. The opportunity to create a retail space and showroom was a dream of ours, and we opened Big Sky Shop + Studio alongside our new office for Big Sky Design. We loved bringing that vision to life and enjoyed the experience for four and a half years. Earlier this year, we made the difficult decision to close our retail venture and return to solely practicing design. While bittersweet, we are grateful for every moment we had with Big Sky Shop + Studio and the support we received from the Wilmington community.

Blue Moon Gift Shops and Eclipse Artisan Boutique
Mary Ann Masucci
Mission:
We just celebrated 25 years in business—a testament to the passion and dedication we’ve had since day one. Our goal has always been to create a shopping destination that makes a difference for our customers and serves as an exceptional outlet for artists and entrepreneurs.
Best advice received: You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with. The strength of your relationships is the key to growth.
What I love most about owning a business in Wilmington: The strong sense of community and lasting relationships.
Words of wisdom: Stay focused on your goals and don’t get distracted by who’s behind you. Keep your energy directed toward reaching your own finish line.
One thing I’ve learned along the way: Persistence is essential for success.
Strengths: My unwavering determination.

Carolina Cleaning Services
Aneliese Bard
Mission:
To give people back their most valuable asset—time. Whether it’s creating space for quality moments with loved ones or enabling the freedom to pursue your passions, we’re here to help you reclaim your day and focus on what matters most.
Business: I started Carolina Cleaning Services 30 years ago, shortly after arriving in the U.S. with my two young sons, then just 5 and 3 years old. Leaving behind my previous career, I felt a deep desire to reinvent my professional life in a way that offered flexibility—not just for business, but for my children. Whether it was carpooling, school activities or life’s important moments, I wanted to be present. Like many mothers, I understood the importance of balancing work and family.
In my home country, I was fortunate to have help at home, and I’ve always believed that a clean, healthy living environment—made possible through support—is not a luxury, but a necessity. It allows families to spend more quality time together and focus on what truly matters.
Today, Carolina Cleaning Services is a trusted name in our community, with hundreds of loyal customers and multiple awards. My business has grown alongside my sons, and I’m proud of the relationships we’ve built and the difference we continue to make in the lives of others.
Best advice received: My mentor, Debbie Sardone, once told me, “Know how to pivot; learn to adapt and recognize when a change of direction is needed. Be bold and courageous.”
What I love most about owning a business in Wilmington: Wilmington isn’t just where I run my business—it’s home. It’s where I raised my two sons, who are now grown with families of their own. Seeing my family grow here fills me with pride, and when someone says, “You’re more of a local than me,” it truly warms my heart.
This journey has never been solely about cleaning—it’s about building relationships and making a meaningful impact in the community. I stay involved with several ministries and nonprofits, always looking for ways to give back. Since 2017, I’ve been especially passionate about partnering with Cleaning for a Reason, an international organization that provides free cleaning services to individuals battling cancer.
Words of wisdom: Have confidence in your own voice and stay focused on your path. This mindset gave me the strength to start a new life in a different country, learn a new language and raise two young children. It wasn’t easy, but I never gave up. One thing I’ve learned along the way: Mistakes are not failures, but valuable opportunities for growth and self-improvement. They serve as lessons in wisdom on the path to success.
Strengths: I am a trustworthy individual with strong leadership skills, driven by passion, commitment, resilience and a desire to make a difference.

Charter Building Group
Holly Overton
Mission:
To take the stress out of building a home through an organized process, good communication and consistent quality.
Business: As co-owner of Charter Building Group, we’ve been building custom homes in the greater Wilmington area for more than 30 years.
Best advice received: The people around you make all the difference. Surround yourself with good people—you’ll learn from each other and enjoy going to work every day.
What I love most about owning a business in Wilmington: It’s a blessing to raise a family and run a business in such a vibrant city. I truly believe in the lifestyle we’re selling, which makes it easy to be authentic with my clients.
Words of wisdom: Sometimes you have to jump in and learn as you go—there’s never a “perfect time” to try something new. In male-dominated industries like homebuilding, being a woman can actually set you apart. See the opportunity and go for it!
One thing I’ve learned along the way: I’m still learning! Business is always evolving. Just when you think you can coast, a curveball comes your way.
Strengths: Empathy has served me well over the years.

What I love most about owning a business in Wilmington: What’s not to love? From the historic downtown to the ocean and everything in between, Wilmington has it all—and the best people, too!
Strengths: Recognizing the strengths in others and building a great team.

Business: We opened Wilmington Dermatology Center in 2008 and have been honored to serve the Wilmington community through comprehensive dermatology, advanced cosmetic services and clinical research.
Best advice received: The only thing I can control is how I react to a situation. You can’t always choose what happens, but you can choose how you respond.
What I love most about owning a business in Wilmington: Even as the area has grown, Wilmington still has a special sense of community. People are genuinely kind and eager to help one another.

Business: We’re a boutique general dentistry practice that combines cutting-edge technology with an elevated care experience to deliver exceptional dental services.

envisioned a family feel to my dental practice, and Wilmington made that possible.
Words of wisdom: If you want to start and grow a successful business, provide a top-notch client experience every time. That internal marketing will carry you far.

Words of wisdom: Find something you love to do, and your work will become one of life’s greatest joys.
What I’ve learned along the way: Being the best isn’t always easy, but the journey matters just as much as the destination. The reward is in how we get there.
