A roadmap to local and nearby dog-friendly destinations
By Fanny Slater
Disclaimer: After this article was written, western North Carolina was recently devastated by Hurricane Helene. We hope Asheville-based businesses will be open and operating shortly. Still, we encourage readers to check social media for official updates and the latest information on access, safety, and any potential disruptions in the area.
Seeing as I grew up with strictly indoor cats whose most remarkable experiences took place on a windowsill, having dogs to accompany me on excursions is a present-day privilege I don't take for granted. And while it's easy to find activities in various cities where dogs are "allowed,"—lodging, restaurants, and escapades where pups are actually encouraged is another story.
…So I decided to write it myself.
Up ahead: a checklist tailored for pet-friendly travel focusing on popular spots in the Southeast where your pup gets VIP (Very Important Puppy) treatment. We start in Wilmington (because who doesn't love a staycation?) then extend to trendy towns within a six-hour drive. Each itinerary includes a place to lay your head—and tail—plus several additional treks where your good boy (or girl) is warmly welcome to tag along. All accommodations deliver staff fluent in furbaby, animal-centric perks like proximity to parks, accessible outdoor spaces, and amenities that make your pup feel right at home.
Wilmington, NC
Aloft Wilmington at Coastline Center
While it's the humans who dig Aloft's modern European vibe and pristine rooms, it's the dogs that get spoiled by the hotel's plush dog beds, bowls, and treats. On top of the obvious reward of no extra pet rates, furry companions are affectionately greeted upon arrival. Aloft's ultra-desirable location—a quick walk from downtown's bustling Riverwalk—also happens to boast the best sunset views in town. Looking to make an afternoon of it with your furry friend? Nearby restaurants and bars offer more pet-friendly patios than you'll be able to hit in a day.
Aunt Kerry's Pet Stop
This beloved community-based business covers the basics (a wide range of pet toys, food, and accessories), but that's just the beginning. Aunt Kerry's product emphasis is on high-quality, natural items and the abundance of homemade dog treats will have your pup prancing for joy. You'll also find a regular rotation of pet-driven gatherings (like "make your own lick mat" parties), adoption events, and philanthropic causes on their calendar. Personalized customer service is at the heart of Aunt Kerry's reputation, and while that goes above and beyond them swooning over your fur baby—don't worry, they do that too.
Ruff Draft
Off-leash dog park meets full bar at Ruff Draft—a safe, fun venue where humans and dogs can take a load (and a leash) off, and the most "Wilmington" business anyone's ever invented. Picture: a supervised, enclosed, indoor-outdoor space with picnic tables and a grassy play zone for pups plus a cozy cocktail area for owners. Ruff Draft operates on a membership-based system with day passes available, and vaccination records are required to enter. Though this is the town's first iteration of a dual socialization concept for dogs and humans, it definitely won't be the last.
Carolina Beach Pier
We recently crowned this waterside eatery "Best Pet-Friendly Restaurant" thanks to their short but sweet doggy menu. While you go ham for the Southern Comfort Quesadilla with tender carnitas, your pup can choose between bacon strips, a pupsicle, or the pun-infused "Diggity Dog." Once you've both joined the clean plate club, grab a salty selfie before heading off the boardwalk and hitting CB's shops.
Savannah, GA
The Thunderbird Inn
This hip, retro-chic hotel in Savannah truly rolls out the red carpet for four-legged guests. Not only does the Thunderbird greet pups with complimentary goodies and snuggly beds, but the dedicated fenced-in dog-run area encourages outdoor play. Speaking of—the hotel is just a short walk from Savannah's lush parks (see more on Forsyth below) and the famous River Street. Swing by the front desk before heading out as the staff is full of pet experts eager to share their top recommendations for dog-friendly spots around the city.
Forsyth Park
Having a spacious park nearby is a necessity when traveling with your pup, and Forsyth—less than a mile walk from The Thunderbird—is a quintessential community hub for humans and animals alike. It flaunts an expansive 30 acres, historic monuments, beautiful garden areas, and a year-round Saturday farmers' market. The shady, oak tree-lined walking paths (plus dog-accessible water fountains) are ideal for those warm southern days, while the park's designated off-leash area allows pups to frolic to their heart's desire.
Oliver Bentleys Historic Dog Walk Tour
History isn't just for humans, after all. Tailor-made for you and your pack (two dogs per human max), the Oliver Bentleys Historic Dog Walk Tour is a must when visiting Savannah. The 90-minute, leisurely 1-mile stroll takes you and your leashed pup through the heart of Savannah's Historic District, sniffing out seven of its iconic squares. A tour guide shares fascinating stories of the city's rich past, additional dog-friendly locations, and photo ops while you savor the surrounding azaleas, live oaks, and charming streets. Every dog on the tour receives a complimentary bag of Ollie B. Biscuits.
Charleston, SC
The Vendue
Both human and canine guests are treated like royalty at this art-filled boutique hotel in the French Quarter. The Vendue is a quick beat from Rainbow Row and waterfront areas. Next-level amenities include adorable branded placemats, bowls, and organic treats for your pup plus complimentary art tours, wine, and above-and-beyond touches like an evening milk and cookie service for you. Dogs are even invited to the rooftop bar which we think makes for the happiest of happy hours.
Exclusive Fishing Charters
It's not hard to find Charleston-based family activities that offer wonderful days on the water, but not many allow your pup to participate. Exclusive Fishing Charters is equally pet-and-fisherman-friendly. Capitan John keeps doggie life-preservers on board for safety and encourages snapping sunset pictures of your bonding time. Bonus points if your pup reels one in.
Dog & Duck
Though you'll likely only run into one of the animals in this restaurant's name, Dog & Duck in Summerville is a special place nonetheless. The casual pub is a celebrated spot for socializing in all forms of the word. The covered patio often hosts a dog or three, so four-legged friends are urged to join the party (and even offered a burger patty for under five bucks). For you, we recommend the crispy grouper bites.
Asheville, NC
1900 Inn on Montford
With certain pet-friendly vistas (like the enchanting Cloisters room) allowing two dogs of any size and the benefit of no extra fees, 1900 Inn on Montford is a one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast experience. Think built-in dog trays, gourmet pup biscuits, welcome baskets, lighted leashes, and extra towels for messy paws. Each pet-friendly suite has a patio so your furry friend can lounge in the open air, and Cloisters bodes 1,300 square feet of space, a private entrance, and enclosed rear garden. Also on deck: a comfy king-size bed, jacuzzi-style Whirlpool tub, gas fireplace, and bluegrass-themed social hour with local musicians. Did we mention the heated marble floors and homemade three-course breakfast delivered to your door?
Grovewood Village
Cultural gatherings that permit dogs are few and far between, so Asheville residents and tourists give a massive tail wag to Grovewood Village museums for their super pet-friendly outdoor and indoor attractions. Located adjacent to the Grove Park Inn, Grovewood Village is a magical fusion of artistry and heritage that showcases arts and crafts from over 500 artists in the US. From the impressive antique car museum to the art galleries and outdoor sculptures—there are plenty of places for you and your pup to roam through.
Posana
Allowing pups on patios is fairly common, but Posana's take on pet-friendly dining is truly impressive. This organic, sustainable farm-to-table restaurant, overlooking Historic Pack Square, offers a full dog menu that keeps pet owners raving. They proudly pamper your pups with a three-course meal (you read that right), complete with a choice of two doggy brews from Bowser Beer. Dogs can start with house-made biscuits, indulge in a main course of grilled Joyce Farms chicken with brown rice, and cap it off with a seasonal selection of ice cream.
Charlotte, NC
Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel
Though we're championing dog-friendly destinations here, it's pretty cool to know your hamster, iguana, or parakeet could partake in your travels to the Queen City. Kimpton Tryon Park is a pet lover's paradise, enticing all furry and feathered friends with no extra fees or size limits. Book a "Pet Getaway" and enjoy courtesy delivery of waste bags, pet beds, and water bowls, plus toys and locally-made dog cookies. Smack dab across the street sits Bearden Park—an urban oasis of open green spaces, gardens, and views of the skyline. If you're venturing out solo, reach out to the front desk about your complimentary access to premium pet-sitting services.
Bark in the Ballpark
Truist Field's Bark in the Ballpark takes "fetch" to a whole new level. As one of Charlotte's favorite community events (with multiple dates each season), this lively game day provides a rare opportunity for you and your dog to catch all the sports action together. Dogs are granted first-class treatment from giveaways to water stations to pet-friendly vendors. Don't miss out on the real grand slam: a pre-game pup parade around the field, where you and your MVP can steal the spotlight before the first pitch.
White Water Center Off-Leash Area
The Whitewater Center has been open to canine companions since its inception in 2006, but the world-class hot spot leveled up in 2024 with its Off Leash area—70 acres of woods, lakes, and trails where dogs can roam freely. Adventure together on the 1.5-mile Lake Loop path that features a pebble beach, dock, and dog wash station. For a refuel, head to the Barley House, a new timber-framed outpost serving up treats and drink offerings for both humans and pups. For celebrations with canines on the guest list, enjoy shaded seating and waterfront views at the Pavilion within the Off-Leash area.
