Jengo’s Summer Film Series
June 11 (and additional dates throughout summer)
Celebrate independent cinema at Jengo’s Playhouse with a diverse summer lineup curated by the team behind the Cucalorus Festival. Highlights include the 21st Annual Docutime Film Festival and a rotating mix of indie gems—from quirky comedies to gripping dramas. Screenings vary by date, with refreshments available and some films recommended for mature audiences. Advance planning is encouraged, as screenings often sell out.
Surf & Skate Adaptive Athletes: Life Rolls On
August 2–3
Experience the inspiration of adaptive athletes in action at Carolina Beach. Saturday’s surfing and Sunday’s skateboarding events empower participants through movement and community. With accessible beach mats, over 40 beach wheelchairs, and a newly expanded skate park, this event brings healing and joy to all involved. Spectators are welcome to join the celebration of strength, inclusivity, and the power of the ocean.
Wahine Classic Surfing Competition
August 9–10
Head to Wrightsville Beach for this beloved all-female surfing competition featuring talent from around the world. From seasoned pros to the youngest “Tiny Wahines,” athletes compete in longboard and shortboard divisions across all levels. The event celebrates empowerment, sportsmanship, and coastal culture. Free to attend for spectators, with registration and event schedules available online. Paid parking is onsite.
Whomparama: Body Surfing Extravaganza
August 9
Catch the waves and the laughs at Whomparama, Carolina Beach’s quirky body surfing competition near Hamlet Avenue. Open to all ages—from “Super Groms” to the “Old As Dirt” division—this longtime favorite blends athleticism with humor and beachside fun. On-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with heats running into the afternoon and an award ceremony later on the boardwalk.
Liquid Summer Food & Drink Festival
August 16
Savor the final splash of summer at this lively festival on Randall Parkway, just outside historic downtown Wilmington. Enjoy live music, DJs, games, food trucks, and more than 100 beer, wine, and spirit tastings. VIP options include early access, shaded cabanas, and exclusive bars. This high-energy event promises a full day of flavor and fun. Must be 21+ with valid ID to participate in tastings.
