The project brings together local artists and residents to create lasting works of art that reflect the community's creativity and collaborative spirit

Three colorful mosaic totems now stand along the oceanfront boardwalk in Kure Beach, the first of six planned installations bringing public art to locations throughout the island. Spearheaded by the Island Arts Council, the project brings together local artists and residents to create lasting works of art that reflect the community's creativity and collaborative spirit.

The tallest of the three totems was created by community members during hands-on workshops led by Island Arts Council artists. Local artists Trent Taylor, Barb Buckley and Leslie Santilli designed and created the two smaller totems. Funding for the project comes from the Island Arts Council and the Wilmington and New Hanover County Arts Council, in conjunction with a grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment.

“This project is a true collaboration between local artists and community members, bringing creativity, participation, and public art together in a meaningful way,” says Barb Buckley, Chairperson of the Island Arts Council.

With five more installations planned, the Island Arts Council will offer additional opportunities for residents to participate in workshops and help bring more colorful mosaics to public spaces across the island.
