The Cameron-Newkirk House on Surry Street is the only surviving Federal-era home in Wilmington with a tripartite configuration. Scottish sea captain George Cameron built the house in 1800 for himself and his wife, Esther, a Virginia native. Cameron sold the property in 1814 to Peter A. Holloman, who occupied the home until 1826, when he sold it to James Cassidy.

In 1910, H.H. Newkirk and his wife, Catherine, purchased the property, which subsequently became known as the Newkirk House. By 1974, the Wilmington Housing Authority was using the home for storage and had plans to demolish it. The Wilmington Historic Society saved the house by purchasing it for $1 and moving it across the street to its current location.

Overlooking the Cape Fear River, the property is one of only two homes in historic downtown Wilmington with direct waterfront frontage. Its formal terraced gardens span three city lots and have been featured on the Azalea Festival Garden Tour several times. The property also contains remnants of the foundations of Cape Fear Machine Works/Broadfoot Iron Works.

The Cameron family has remained prominent in New Hanover County, with a long history of contributions to historic preservation and philanthropy.

Today, the home is the private residence of Rachel Oliver Haas.
